Grad Project 2024

Project Overview
My grad project, a self-directed study which spanned my whole fourth year at Emily Carr, was a deep-dive into the queer nightlife scene in Vancouver. Through this work, I aimed to tell the story of current queer nightlife in the city, celebrating the inclusive spaces the community have worked hard to create while addressing the limitations of the scene and areas for improvement. My book explored the connection between queer nightlife, introversion, and community building.
This project served as an opportunity for me to connect with my community and become more involved in the local queer nightlife scene. Through broader cultural research, site exploration, and design practices, I gained a deeper understanding of the scene, both for myself and for others in the community who wanted to engage more actively. Through my research I found that many people struggle to find information about queer nightlife or don’t know how to foster a sense of community in the city. My goal was to make these spaces and resources more accessible and welcoming to newcomers.

Zine
The zine Queer Nightlife Hotspots: Vancouver accompanies my book to bring the themes of accessibility and community building to life. Its purpose is to make queer nightlife in the city more accessible, particularly for newcomers and those looking to learn more about the scene. The zine features a curated list of venues and organizations to explore, and when unfolded, it reveals a map on the back to guide readers.
